COORAIN UPDATE 16 August 2011

Web site: http://origins.mysouthwest.com.au
FACEBOOK: under ‘Origins Centre and Coorain, Balingup’
Blog: https://originscentre.wordpress.com

SPRING appears to have started. The birds are dressing for the season; the first nests are being made; the lettuces are coming up too and, of course, the grass is growing!

Dean has made a stone foundation for the new composting dunny for the sheoak cabin and he will soon make a new stairway across from the front door of Coorain. Its sure great to have a mason onside! Thank you Dean.

FRIDAY’S SACRED ART & THEATRE : These sessions are really fruitful. The sadhanas are opening to the creative process and each Friday results in an installation around a theme. We are working now on Chenrezi and the expression of compassion according to the six needs. Last Friday was in relation to dullness and stupidity; this Friday is about deep greed and compulsive desire (the preta realm). Sessions go from 7AM to 1PM followed by potluck lunch. Wongkur is at 9:30AM. Please join us if you like. Contact Anne at Coorain.

COORAIN WEEKEND 27th & 28th AUGUST: Puja 7:00AM and AMITAYUS WONGKUR at 9:00AM, then discussion on the Wongkur with hands on sacred art and theatre. All welcome, although you can just attend the wongkur.

PLAINSONG: Each Tuesday, Thursday and friday at 7AM there is chanting for an hour at Coorain. Soon an extended ‘Choir’ chant will start as a part of the sacred art and theatre exploration.

MELBOURNE: Chimé is teaching in Melbourne on the 17th & 18th of September. The Saturday is in the city and the Sunday will be at Phil Rebakis’ family home in Rye (1 Michael St.) on the Mornington Peninsula. You are welcome to come. Please contact Chimé or Anne here at Coorain. The Saturday venue will be announced shortly. All by donation.

INDIA AND SRI LANKA: On 13th FEBRUARY, 2012 Chime, Kim, Tobias and Saya will be going to Sri Lanka and India to check out volunteering at Dharma related NGO’s as well as visiting the nuns and the Gyaltshens in Sikkim. This will be quite a focused trip, meeting people and planning further involvements. We used to frequent Sri Lanka and now that Bev has reopened friendships there, it would be good to return. We will also visit Nagpur where the Ambedkar organisation has a training centre. Chimé will speak there on the subject of activism and the teachings. To inquire or register interest contact Coorain.

LAMA CHOEDAK: Unfortunately, Lama Choedak cannot come to Coorain. We sincerely hope that he can return to us one day.

CHENREZI WONGKUR Wednesday August 31st at 7:30PM

This wonderful celebration of compassion enriches the imagination. It is at Usha’s Yoga Moves Studio, 45 Evans Street, Shenton Park (opposite the lake). It is a teaching wongkur open to all. Please be on time. Chimé will give the wongkur.

PERSONAL DIALOGUE: Chime will be in Perth on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September. Contact Anne at Coorain.

This great project is really doing well. It is now in the next phase of planting, paths and planning. We are determined to have a rural classroom or perhaps a social business to finance the ongoing work, year after year. That’s the thing: it’s each week forever and that seems to be what’s needed. I guess we do live in Australia and human care is essential in our environment.

Tintuppa, (THANK YOU!), a local nursery, have contributed 300 local plants and we have masses of mixed local seed to sow into the ash beds.

If you have an interest in this sort of work, please get in touch – perhaps you could help. Erin, a cartographer, has set us straight for future mapping. Does anyone have some spare binoculars?

We are trying to raise some more funds, say $10,000, to get us through this next phase. Chim will be seeing TAFE soon about our offering training for skill sets.

RETREATS: Kate has just finished a much appreciated week here at Coorain. We have one cabin available if you want…

Friends from NZ will be here soon to do retreat also.

Coorain Update 18/7

Blog: https://originscentre.wordpress.com

ABOUT COORAIN AND ORIGINS CENTRE’S FUTURE UPDATES Guess you all know by now that we will no longer be using our email list to send our updates. This is the last Coorain update to be sent out like this. In future please check the website for all NEWS AND UPDATES. Alternatively you can still have the updates come to your email address by signing up at: http://origins.mysouthwest.com.au/Sign%20Up

Anne here sitting at Coorain. Today started with -2 degrees, clear, bright and a frost all about – winter is here, our outdoor water shrine is frozen!

Chimé who is teaching in New Zealand sends his best wishes to all. It has been a busy and successful visit. He arrives in Christchurch today for a short stay, then Auckland. Happy travels Chimé and a safe return.

Sacred Art and Theatre: A committed group explore our Friday’s Sacred Art and Theatre. This is a rich day of exploration and fun. If you can commit to this day then please do join in.

Puja (plainsong chants) is on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 AM. All welcome to join in. Texts are available at Coorain.

Coorain work mornings are Thursdays until 11 AM. Why not come to puja and breakfast first?!

Coorain Weekends: The next ‘Coorain Weekend’ will be with Dolma on July 30 and August 1. Starting with the Wongkur of Maitraya at 9:30AM Saturday.

The last ‘Coorain Weekend’ went well, the topic was Refuge and a Sakyamuni Wongkur (see our blog for photos) with Dolma.

Coorain Retreats. We have two cabins available for short and long term retreat/study. Some instruction time for discussion can also be arranged.

Brian continues with the physical care, planting, pathways and weed control between Coorain and OC. A big thanks – such a beautiful project evolving. We have had some precious rain so have been able to proceed with plantings. Thank you to Tintuppa Nursery for the gift of local plants collected from seed in the upper section of the Balingup Brook. This will be at the end of August and for immediate planting. If you would like to help dig holes please join us!

Any donations to this ongoing vital and important work can be made to: Origins Centre Inc, Coorain. A/c # 066 504 10056415.

This project which supports the Karmapa’s Nunnery in Rumtek, Sikkim, is really worth supporting. It has been cared for by Marina for 13 years now, with all funds taken by hand to the Nunnery. So if you know of a good venue for incense sales then please let us know. Or you could buy a few yourself. There will be a trip to visit the nuns later this year so we are hoping to sell a few more tubes before then.

Chime and Brian have finished the slashing and burning of both Origins and Coorain properties. A mammoth effort, comprising 24 hrs work per week , from the first week of November 2010 until the first week of May 2011. As you would imagine, this is only the first stage, with weed control being ongoing (Chime whipper snipped both properties last week to keep the new emerging blackberry shoots down.). The three main problems are Blackberry, Phalaris grass and Bridal creeper.

I’ve posted a 360 degree panoramic shot taken from the Bibbulman track fence line on the Coorain block (just below the dam), and looking uphill towards Coorain so that you too can appreciate the amount of effort that has been put into the land.

Landcare View

Note the wall of Blackberry and Phalaris on the Brook boundary. Most of the property was like this.

Here is a photo taken (in around the same spot) about 3 years ago, at the last tree planting and enviromental art festival at Origins.

Note elbow high Phalaris

Thanks to Chime and Brian, we now have a fire safe property, and a managed forest.

Stay tuned for more Landcare reports on new nesting boxes for the woodland, Transects and how they are useful for us, new ideas on weed control and more….

BRILLIANT BLOG SITE IDEA  https://originscentre.wordpress.com   It would be fun and interesting if you could email photos (not bigger than 600kb) to Dolma of recent events, or archival, taken at Origins.  Share a short story of OC, on it’s own or with a photo.  Please email your ‘inspired moments’ to Dolma <coorain@sctelco.net.au> and she will add them to our blog.
